PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES
The first learning experience in the series is to establish what Simon Sinek would call The Why, or the purpose of the entire professional learning series (2009). John Hattie is known for his meta analysis of the research in the field. His TEDx Talk, “Why are so many of our teachers and schools so successful?” breaks down the research on what makes an impact and what does not make much impact (2013).
Goal

In small groups, discuss, “Why are so many of our teachers and schools so successful?” Record thoughts on the chart paper.
-
Instruct colleagues that while watching the video, make notes of ideas, questions or connections that arise as Hattie speaks.
-
Watch Hattie’s TEDx Talk, “Why are so many of our teachers and schools so successful?” (2013).
-
Have a Conver-stations discussion. Continue to discuss the question, “Why are so many of our teachers and schools so successful?” In a Conver-Station, teachers will begin discussing their notes to again answer the driving question. After a few minutes, rotate one or two people to a new group. Continue building upon the discussion and refreshing it with the new ideas (Gonzalez, 2017).
-
On an exit ticket, answer two questions:
-
Did your answer change to the original question? Yes or no
-
If you answered yes, what do you now think the answer is to “Why are so many of our teachers and schools so successful?”
